2014 Measure P: Healthy Air and Water Initiative
In 2014 the Santa Barbara County Water Guardians formed a grassroots, local, citizen-lead coalition to qualify an initiative for the ballot to ban fracking, acidizing and steam injection in Santa Barbara County. The initiative was on the County ballot in November of 2014. It was leading in the polls in July, but was ultimately defeated after oil companies spent a record $7.6 million dollars to defeat it, the most ever spent against a local ballot measure, and due to a low turnout election. The astounding amount of outside money spent in Santa Barbara against this citizen initiative broke many records. It was more money than spent on any congressional race in California and more than Neil Kashkari spent on the California state gubernatorial race.
